CHICAGO (Reuters Health) Dec 05 - Use of "an angled gantry approach," or "angled axial image acquisition" during coronary computed tomography (CT) angiography significantly reduces the amount of radiation delivered to breast tissue, radiologists from Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia reported Thursday at the 94th Scientific Assembly and Annual Meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA 2008).

Dr. Ethan Halpern and colleagues reviewed images obtained with a 64-slice helical scanner during 100 consecutive coronary CT angiography examinations.

The investigators evaluated sagittal images to define the position of the breasts and determine the gantry angulation that would be necessary in order to perform a CT examination in a view parallel to the long axis of the heart.

A standard axial image required a 6.5 cm overlap with the lower breast for coronary CT angiography. The angled scan required only a 3.2 cm overlap, meaning the dose of radiation delivered to breast tissue was cut in half, Dr. Halpern told meeting attendees.

"Angled gantry is a feasible technique for coronary angiography," he said. "These results warrant the development of machines that can perform this technique."
